Beautiful old town of Jelgava is situated on the River Lielupe, 40 km from the Latvian capital city of Riga from the Baltic sea and the Gulf of Riga and Jurmala resort. The city is famous winter swimming club «Jelgavas Roņi», which this year celebrats 28 years anniversary.
In 2009, in November, when the water is ice, on the idea of the club on the river Lielupe near Jelgava Castle (project architect Rastrelli) in Jelgava Yacht Club held the 1st International Open Winter Swimming Cup «Jelgavas Roņi Kauss», and this year has been planned the 10th Championship for November 2, which became among the world winter swimmers very popular. Winter swimmers from Estonia (Tallinn, Tartu, Viimsi, Pärnu, Narva), from Russia (St. Petersburg, Moscow, Pskov, Petrozavodsk, Novosibirsk, Tyumen, Vladivostok), from Lithuania, Norway, USA, England, Finland, Ireland, Poland, Italy, Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Sweden and even from Israel, Australia, Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Mongolia have interested in the participation!
