9th Jelgavas Roni Cup – for the third time the 1st stage of IWSA World Cup was held in November the 3rd and 4th, 2017 in the charming city Jelgava. As it was planned, the venue for the championship was the area between the bridges “Driksas” and “Mītavas” right in the city centre, between the restaurant “Pilsētas Elpa” and the teahouse “Silva”, and promenade on the opposite.
The event was successfully held according to the plan. On November the 3rd registration and accreditation took place, each participant received a certificate for participation, swimmers pass, JR Cup 2017 commemorative medal and Jelgava magnet. On the 3rd of November distances of 50m, 100m freestyle and 450m endurance swim took place, which were held in the 9x25m lane pool (for 3 lanes more than last year). The official opening ceremony was held on the 4th of November with participation of the representative of the Centre of Sport Services Aljona Fomenko, the president of International Winter Swimming Association (IWSA) Mariia Yrjö-Koskinen, the chairman of Belarusian winter swimming federation Vladimir Shulgan and the vice president of IWSA, also the main organizer of the Cup Aleksandr Jakovlev (the chairman of Jelgavas Roni club). Further there were 4 kinds of swims with time control (relay freestyle swim 4х25m, 25m breaststroke, 25m butterfly and 50m breastroke), as well as non-timing swims with 32 new swimmers taking part (14 women and 18 men) in races 25m, 50m and a dip, all of them straight after their swim received a certificate for participation and a commemorative medal. The championship was successful and was held on a high organization level.
290 winter swimmers (for 88 participants more compared to last year) from 16 countries (Latvia, Estonia, Russia, Belarus, United Kingdom, Finland, Ireland, Czech Republic, Poland, Denmark, Germany, Slovakia, Ukraine, USA, Brazil and Chile) took part in Jelgavas Roni Cup 2017. On the whole, there were 555 individual starts (in distances – 50m and 100m freestyle, 25m breaststroke, 25m butterfly and 50m freestyle). Among which 35 swimmers from 9 age groups participated in 450m endurance freestyle swim (14 women and 21 men).
15 teams fought for “Jelgavas Roni Cup 2017” in 2 groups of relay team swim (S1 – less than 150 years (the sum of ages of participants) and S2 – more than 150 years in sum). The best result of the group S1 was shown by Belarusian team “Belgart-1” (2nd and 3rd place also went to Belarus teams “Belgart-2” and “Belgart-4”) and for the S2 group it was Belarus again, team “Belgart-6” (2nd place went to Jelgavas Roni “Torpedos” team, Latvia, 3rd place – team “Aqua Sphere Keep Frozen”, Germany). Winner teams got “Jelgavas Roni Cup 2017”.
Considering all points for swims the “Nations Cup” won team of Latvia the third time in a row, again handing to the club “Jelgavas Roņi”, that earned the most points in all the categories, 2nd place is Germany, 3rd – Poland.
