8th Jelgavas Roni Cup – for the second time the 1st stage of IWSA World Cup was held in November the 4th and 5th, 2016 in beautiful city Jelgava. As it was planned, the venue for the championship was the area between the bridges “Driksas” and “Mītavas” right in the city center, near the teahouse “Silva” and promenade on the opposite.
The event successfully occurred according to the plan. On November the 4th participants registration and accreditation was opened. Each participant received a certificate for participation and swimmers pass. On the first day of the competition took place the 450m endurance swim, which was held in the pool of 6 lanes 25m each. On 5th of November was held the official opening ceremony with participation of the mayor of the city Jelgava Andris Rāviņš, director of the Centre of Sport Services Juris Kaminskis, the president of International Winter Swimming Association (IWSA) Mariia Yrjö-Koskinen and vice president of IWSA, also the main organizer of the Cup Aleksandr Jakovlev. Further there were 4 kinds of swims with time control (relay freestyle swim 4х25m, breaststroke 25m, butterfly 25m and freestyle 50m), as well as non-timing swims, where 9 absolutely new swimmers took part. The championship was successful and was held on very high emotional level.
202 winter swimmers from 17 countries (Latvia, Estonia, Russia, United Kingdom, Finland, Ireland, Poland, Denmark, Germany, Belarus, France, Austria, Sweden, Belgium, USA, Chile and Jamaica) took part in Jelgavas Roni Cup 2016. On the whole there were 337 individual starts (in distances – 450m freestyle, 25m breaststroke, 25m butterfly and 50m freestyle). Among which 7 women and 23 men participated in 450m endurance freestyle swim.
15 teams fought for “Jelgavas Roni Cup 2016” in 2 groups of relay team swim (S1 – less than 200 years (the sum of ages of participants) and S2 – more than 200 years in sum). The best result of the group S1 was shown by Estonian team “ Tallinn Winterswimming Centre”, and for the S2 group it was Estonia again, team “U-Club”, Tallinn. Each team got “Jelgavas Roni Cup 2016”.
Considering all points for swims the “Nations Cup” won team of Latvia the second time in a row, again handing to the club “Jelgavas Roņi”, that earned the most points in all the heats.
